What is Ashtanga yoga?
Ashtanga yoga is based on a specialized sequence of postures, called asanas, and focused breathing technique, called pranayama. There are a number of series. The primary series can be therapeutic and build strength and flexibility. Included in the sequence are the sun salutations, standing postures with balancing, seated postures, backbends, and savasana (rest). The second series includes more backbends and arm balances. Focused breathing techniques include ujjiya breath which is a deep breath with an ocean-like sound, alternate nostril breathing called nadi shodana, and breath retention called kumbhaka.
Do I have to be flexible to do yoga?
You do not have to be flexible to do yoga. You will gain flexibility if you practice regularly. The practice includes numerous hip and shoulder openers, hamstring stretches, backbends, and twists.
Will I gain strength doing yoga?
You will definitely gain strength in your whole body if you practice regularly. Planks, chaturanga (low plank), standing postures, and balancing encourage muscle development and strength.
Will I lose weight doing yoga?
It is very possible that you will lose weight if you practice yoga 5 to 6 times a week. for 60 minutes or more. Eating lightly goes hand-in-hand with a regular practice because you will be able to go deeper into a posture.
Will I get a cardio workout doing yoga?
Though yoga is not considered an aerobic exercise, doing a vigorous vinyasa flow with intensity, dynamism, and deep breathing will bring up your pulse rate.
Is there a specific age to begin yoga?
I have taught ages 3 to 90 years old. Any age is the perfect age to begin yoga!
