My teaching style is based on the principles of Ashtanga yoga. Correct alignment, being present and breathing are emphasized. Please come to class often to attain a strong and flexible mind and body. I am dedicated to finding the practice that works for you, whether it be in a group or personalized session.
I was raised in a loud and loving extended Italian American family in Newark, New Jersey. “Sports” consisted of street kickball, hide and seek and rafting in the ocean. Music was a big part of my family's life which inspired me to earn a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance.
When I moved to Connecticut, I taught piano and flute privately and decided to open my own music school. I ran Pro Musica in Simsbury, Connecticut for over 20 years until a devastating fire destroyed the building. Concurrently, a personal tragedy left me a single parent to two teenage daughters. It was a very difficult time. I moved my family to West Hartford after being hired by Renbrook School as a music and movement instructor for young children.
Soon thereafter, I took my first class at West Hartford Yoga in 2005 at age 50. From the first moment I stepped on the mat, it felt like home, and deep breathing came naturally to me. Yoga became a passion and a necessity for my peace of mind. When I was introduced to Ashtanga yoga in 2009, I couldn't get enough and would often take two classes a day. The type of yoga I both practice and teach emphasizes a solid foundation built with patience and perseverance. Now that I’m an empty nester and many family members have passed, I find much solace in my practice. It helps me celebrate life in the present and appreciate the beautiful world and people that surround me.
I am a Certified Yoga Teacher (200HR Power). I also have certifications as a therapeutic, yin, and children’s yoga teacher. I continue to take intensive training and led classes. My primary teacher for many years has been David Garrigues. Other teachers who have helped me along my Ashtanga yoga path are; David Swenson (Kripalu), Gillian Mooney (Dublin), Christine Hoar (Costa Rica), Jeff Zweig, Kino MacGregor, Randolph Osgood, Jen Rene and Eddie Stern.
I am certified as a Fitness Nutrition Specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, supporting my lifelong passion for healthy living and eating.
I believe a dedicated yoga practice can become a restorative experience both physically and mentally. Daily attention to breath and movement can bring peace of mind, improved posture and balance, better sleep and focus, and a feeling of well-being. My intention is to show that yoga is for everybody and can be practiced throughout the day, everyday.
